THE mayor of Chichester has announced he will step down from his post for ‘personal reasons’.

Councillor Alan Chaplin will hang up his mayor’s cloak and chain tomorrow (December 19).

He thanked fellow Chichester City Council members and council officers for their support and advice since May 2013, when he became mayor.

Former mayor Richard Plowman who sits on the city council, said: “We very much respect Alan Chaplin’s decision to stand down as mayor; it must have been a difficult decision to make.

“We would like to thank Alan for his work in the exacting and demanding role as mayor. However, we do welcome Alan’s decision to carry on as a city councillor as he has a wealth of experience on housing and planning matters which will be in much demand as the Local Plan and its implications are being considered.”

A special meeting of the city council will be held early in the new year to elect a mayor to serve out the remaining period of office until the annual meeting of the council in May 2014.
