UNITING the community, organisers of a summer feast in Chichester hoped Sunday’s Big Lunch would bring people together (June 1).
Last Sunday, The Big Lunch saw an estimated four million communities across the UK sit down for a Big Lunch with neighbours they may not previously have known, as part of partner Halifax’s Helping Britain Prosper Plan.
The Swanfield Community Centre was a hive of activity with more than 40 people in attendance, enjoying face painting, apple bobbing and sports games.
Organiser Jade Holding said: “The entertainment went down really well with the guests, the face painting was really popular with the children.
“Spirit FM were present, running a competition and giving us some good promotion on the radio.
“We attracted people who were walking past the event to join in with the fun as well. It was a really great day all round.”
To reward those who gave extra and organised an event for their neighbours, Halifax made available 10,000 free Big Lunch boxes containing colourful themed balloons, bunting, table cloths, plates and cups to create a real party atmosphere.
Over the years millions of people have taken part in Big Lunches and made a real change in their communities, with Chichester’s organiser Jade confident the same can now be said for her and her neighbours.
Organising a Big Lunch is just one way that people can make a difference in their community, with Halifax committed to being the banking group that brings communities closer together to help them thrive.
Another way is to pledge on Halifax’s website, and after Sunday’s Big Lunch success, Jade is urging as many people as possible to get involved.
“It was an absolutely amazing event, there was a good turnout with a mixture of people – young and old – from the community,” she added.
“It’s a fun, free day which allows you to meet members of the community that you wouldn’t normally meet.”
Halifax is helping people give extra in their communities, whether hosting a Big Lunch event, or making their community a better place to live. To recognise and reward people who are giving extra, Halifax is rewarding members of the public who make one of four pledges at www.halifax.co.uk/pledge.
