A man with a watering can came to the rescue of a motoryclist who was engulfed in flames following a crash in North Chailey.

Police are investigating a crash on the A272 at North Chailey which happened at 9.45am on Sunday (June 14) and left a motorcyclist from Hove seriously injured.

The 39-year-old man was last in a line of motorcyclists riding west when his black KTM Superduke left the road on a bend and overturned into undergrowth.

Police said the motorcycle and rider were engulfed in flames, but the rider managed to get clear of his blazing bike before collapsing on the ground.

A man living nearby managed to douse the flames on the rider with the contents of a watering can and then gave him first aid until emergency services arrived.

The rider was flown to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, by the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance where he is being treated for severe burns.

Anyone who saw what happened or may have other information is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting serial 489 of 14/6.
