A motorist whose car broke down in the outside lane of a dual carriageway during rush hour at Fontwell is the first person to be convicted following the launch of Surrey and Sussex Police’s summer crackdown on drink and drug-drivers.

From Monday June 6, officers have been carrying out dedicated patrols to target offenders as part of Operation Dragonfly.

According to a Sussex Police statement, shortly before 8am on Thursday June 9, police received reports of a stationary vehicle on the A27 westbound at Fontwell.

The statement adds that officers removed the car from the carriageway and after detecting alcohol on his breath, the driver was arrested at the scene.

Adem Hasa, 24, a cleaner, of Ebrington Street in Plymouth, Devon, was charged with driving with 65mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, driving without insurance and driving without a test certificate.

The legal limit is 35mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Police say that he appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Friday (June 10), where he pleaded guilty and was disqualified from driving for 17 months.

He was also fined £550, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £27 victim surcharge.

A further 45 motorists were arrested on suspicion of drink or drug-related driving offences in Sussex in the first seven days of the campaign, which runs until July 10.

Of these, 29 have so far been charged with offences and are due to appear in court.
