Graffitied sentences such as '˜Islamic State kill the English' and '˜ISIS' have appeared around Chichester for several weeks, according to reports.

After the Chichester Observer ran a story on its website yesterday that ‘Death to English’ had been scrawled on a building in The Hornet, a number of people have got in contact to say similar vandalism has happened at night on several other roads.

Simon Davies sent in a picture of graffiti written in black pen saying ‘Islamic State kill the English’ outside his house in Oving Road, and said it ‘has been going on for at least two weeks’.

Others reported seeing similar graffiti in various streets around the city since just after Christmas.

According to neighbours, the graffiti on the side of flats in the Hornet appeared on both Wednesday and Thursday, before being quickly washed off, allegedly by the owner of the flats.

A woman who contacted the Observer about the Hornet vandalism on Wednesday night, said her daughter had been left ‘very distressed’ after seeing the words ‘ISIS’ in white paint.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “There has been graffiti twice on the walls with the words Islamic State in the last couple of weeks.

“Have seen someone wash it down and painted over.

“Now this evening (Wednesday) my daughter has said that in white paint ISIS is now on the wall.

“Obviously after today’s horrible acts, my daughter is very distressed as it is a little worrying that this type of graffiti is in Chichester.”

Police are understood to be investigating and the Observer is waiting for an official comment.
