A LURCHER puppy was rescued from a sealed van at West Wittering beach yesterday (July 14).

Sussex Police and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service worked together to release the dog from the vehicle on the hottest day of the year.

“As I was loading the car I heard a whimpering noise coming from a white van parked next to my car,” said a concerned beach-goer. “Someone had locked their dog in the van which was one of those sealed vans so not only was there no air it was pitch black and of course was like an oven inside. I can’t believe anyone could be that stupid.”

After the pup was saved, the owner was taken into custody for an offence under the animal welfare act.

A police spokeswoman said: “Please remember, don’t leave dogs in hot cars! You may just end up spending some time with us or having a visit from a local wildlife crime officer.”

The incident has caused furore on Chichester Police’s Facebook page.
