Principal, William Baldwin, congratulated the students on the results - which saw a 98.4 per cent over all pass rate - calling it a "remarkable achievement".

As with GCSEs, there have been some changes in the way A-Levels are handled.

This was the first year in which students took exams at the end of their two-year courses in some subjects, rather than relying on course work.

Mr Baldwin said: "Both teachers and students should be rightly praised for these results, especially given that to achieve them they had to navigate new specifications and assessment frameworks in some subjects.

"Parents and our partner schools must also get credit and thanks for their input into these results. They are testament to the learning culture that has been created here at BHASVIC and are evidence that students who come here have every opportunity to fulfil their potential.

"Congratulations to all our students – whether they are going off to university, gap years or into the workplace – we wish them the best of luck for their future."

Students at BHASVIC sat nearly 3,300 exams, with A* grades making up 13.3 per cent of the results – again more than 1 per cent higher than last year.

Results for vocational qualifications were equally impressive, recording a 96.5 per cent pass rate, 82 per cent at Distinction or above.

Mr Baldwin added: "We pride ourselves on being open access and non-selective in the students we take - prospective students can study three A levels here if they have achieved six GCSEs - and these results remain some of the best in the country even in comparison to selective and independent schools."
