WATER was the subject of a global experiment which Year 10 pupils at Chichester High School For Boys took part in as part of the International Year of Chemistry.
The experiment involved pupils measuring the amount of salt in natural waters. They collected samples from the sea at Worthing, Felpham, Chichester and Portsmouth then filtered the samples to remove any sand and seaweed. The next step was to measure out 100 millilitres as accurately as possible then transfer it to a pre-weighed evaporating basin. The mass was then re-weighed, and the mixture evaporated to leave just the salt crystals.
Afterwards the basins were weighed again to work out how much salt was left in each sample.
