Expansion of Chichester district schools agreed

Expansion of schools in the Chichester district has been agreed by the county council.

Southbourne’s Bourne Community College is set to increase from a five form entry (150 places) to a six form entry (180 places) school from September.

Meanwhile Chidham Parochial Primary School, Compton and Up Marden Church of England Primary School, and Funtington Primary School are also set to see their admissions numbers raised.

Expansion plans for nine schools were approved by West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for finance this week, responding to a mixture of increasing birth rate, migration, and housebuilding across the county.

A consultation on the changes was held in November and December 2016, with 195 responses received, the majority coming from three schools, one of which was Chidham.

Of the 28 responses, 18 objected raising concerns with the narrow access to the school, the speed of traffic, damaged pavements, road safety, and a lack of adequate access for emergency vehicles.

Both the board of governors and the parish council however support the proposal as long as action is taken to address the access issues.

Discussions are taking place with the Safer Routes to School team, while the school has proposed a staggered start time for different age groups to take the pressure off the road network.

Other suggestions include a ‘park and stride’ scheme.
