YOUNGSTERS at Fishbourne Primary School have been making great strides in their reading ability thanks to a refreshed library space.
The school ran a competition for pupils to draw their favourite characters from books, with the characters which best represented each year group being painted on to the library wall.
It is one of a number of initiatives to drive pupils’ interest in more reading at the school.
Library co-ordinator Tessa Allen said a re-design of the space, giving pupils responsibility as librarians, and helping each other read has given them more confidence.
Tessa said: “When I took the library over it was in the corridor, as many schools are.
“Now we have developed it.”
Year Six pupils are also heavily involved in helping others read and looking after the library by taking it in turns as librarians.
Current librarian Molly Baker said: “It’s a nice environment for children.”
