For a small school to have done so well is a mark of the improvements being made at the Westergate academy.

Naomi Hursthouse, assistant associate principal and head of English, said: “Having come joint third last year, we were delighted to win the quiz in 2017.

This year’s featured authors were Jamie Thompson, Miriam Halahmy, Ali Sparkes and Andy Briggs, and in preparation for the quiz, all students had to read one of their books.

On the day, the students answered questions about the books, as well as questions to test their general knowledge of literature.

Rounding off a day of literacy and reading, Jamie Thomson visited the academy in the afternoon to deliver an inspiring and interactive talk about his Dark Lord series of books and his work as an author, as well as signing copies for students to purchase.

The Chichester Literature Quiz is run by Portsmouth School Library Service and supported by the Hayling Island Bookshop.
