A gas cylinder fire led to firefighters being called to a builders’ yard near Goodwood today, fire services have confirmed.

Employees at Valdoe Quarry were evacuated as a precaution after fire services were called to the scene at around 8.50am this morning.

The cylinder of acetylene was potentially explosive and crews remained at the scene to cool the cylinder down with jets until around 11.30am, a fire spokesperson confirmed.

A thermal imaging camera was used to gauge the temperature of the pressurised container, a tweet from the service added.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue explained the small fire was out on arrival but that the area was cordoned off as a precaution.

Crews from Bognor, Chichester and Billingshurst were at the scene.
