Fire services have confirmed that a report of a car fire on the eastbound carriageway of the A27 this afternoon was a false alarm.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said a crew from Chichester was called to the scene near Fishbourne Roundabout just after 4pm.

The vehicle is believed to have suffered a blown engine or a mechanical failure, the fire spokesperson added.

Police are en route to the scene, where firefighters will hand over the incident to police officers, according to fire services.
