THE ‘overwhelming’ support of Witterings residents has seen a pharmacy foodbank collection flourish.

Pharmacist Das Bhambra and others set up the collection earlier this month for the Chichester Foodbank at the Witterings Medical Centre.

“Chichester is a well-to-do area but there are families that are struggling,” he said.

“In this day and age, if people are struggling for food in this country, that should never be the case.”

He said it was better for people to give food, rather than money, as this benefit went straight to the person.

“The actual foodbank have said that they’re so overwhelmed with the amount of collections that we have managed to get.

“We sent three boxes on Friday – decent-sized cardboard boxes – and I think the trolley is nearly full again. It’s really good.”

Mr Bhambra said many people were already aware of the foodbank, thanks to a high-profile Tesco campaign. He urged people with food ‘hanging around’ in the back of their cupboards to donate.

“People are very nice around this area and their support is overwhelming,” he added.
