Firefighters called to second Chichester lightning strike

Waiting for Video...

LIGHTNING has struck a Chichester home this morning (June 7), as thunderstorms crossed the area.

Firefighters from Chichester and Bognor Regis were called to King George Gardens at 9.29am today, after lightning struck a chimney there.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the Chichester and Bognor Regis teams were both mobilised initially, but the Bognor team were stood down when it became clear the there was no fire at the home.

There was damage to the chimney and bricks were falling into the garden.

A team from Southsea arrived to make the roof safe and used sheeting inside the house to make it waterproof.

Firefighters left the scene two hours later at 11.27am.

Fortunately, the lightning strike was not as severe as the one which hit a home in Mumford Place, Chichester, on May 22, which caused a large fire as it blew out the gas fires in the property.
