FISHERMEN are being urged to stay safe during January - the most dangerous month of the year.

The lifesaving charity Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has launched a hard-hitting campaign encouraging fishermen to make sure their boats are safe at sea after research found that more fishermen die in January than in any other month of the year.

The campaign includes five short films with practical advice from experts to help fishermen stop their boats losing stability during the period when seas can be rough and very cold.

Emotive adverts are being used which show the family of a dead fisherman, with the strapline ‘Dad’s gone fishing’.

These adverts will appear on Facebook posts and in commercial fishing publications and websites.

Drinks glasses, coasters and coffee mugs supporting the campaign will be distributed to fishing ports.

The films can be viewed at RNLI.org/stability.
