A HUGELY busy 24-hour period for the fire brigade saw them turning out at a number of properties to combat flooding on Saturday (January 12).
A 60th birthday party was ongoing in the evening at the Pond Barn Restaurant, in Farm Road, Bracklesham, while outside fire crews worked to pump out the overflowing pond, which came within inches of entering the restaurant at 7.30pm.
Restaurant owner Jean King said the fire brigade had been “very very good.”
“They were here in five minutes, and they had had lots of calls.”
Earlier in the day, at Watery Lane, in Funtington, crews were called around 2pm to a house whose ground floor had been affected by flooding from foul drains nearby.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were unable to stop the flow, and the Southern Water Company were contacted.
Rescue crews concentrated their efforts on salvage work.
Later in the afternoon, around 4.45pm, in Shore Road, East Wittering, a pump had to be used to reduce the water level in a house. The incident was left with the occupier.
An hour later in West Wittering flooding was affecting a house’s electricity and pumps again had to be used to reduce the water level.
