LIFEBOATMAN Nigel Roper has been awarded the freedom of Chichester Harbour for his commitment.

Nigel started sailing at the age of five and, during 60 years of sailing, has been an active member of the harbour community. He has been a member of the Royal National Lifeboat Association since 1977, becoming honorary secretary of Hayling Island Lifeboat Station in 1996. He is currently the vice chairman of the Friends of Chichester Harbour.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy’s director Siún Cranny said: “Nigel is well respected throughout the harbour by his crew, the clubs, yachtsmen, and Friends, for his support of the boating and local communities.”
