St Mary Our Lady, Sidlesham, put on a traditional English event with fun, sideshows and stalls such as books, bric-a-brac and plants.

Music was provided by the Chichester City Band.

Churchwarden Janet Harland said: “It was opened by a nonagenarian who is a parishioner of Sidlesham.

“When Deirdre was announced, the Chichester City Band struck up the National Anthem and she arrived in a splendid Alvis, waving Union Jacks as she toured the field.

“Father Stephen Guise invited her up to the microphone and she declared the fête open.”

The afternoon continued with the annual dog show, tours of the church tower, a mini show and tug of war.

Helpers on the stalls, sideshows and refreshments worked hard to look after the many visitors who came from near and far.

Janet added: “We learned that a couple from Somerset come every year and then go to the theatre in the evening.

“Although the fête raises money for the church, it is a truly community event.

“The total raised at the moment is £8,700 and this will help to keep the lights on, the heating going through the winter and all the costs that come with maintaining a Grade I listed building.”
