Get the truth on fat loss

Choices, choices...
Choices, choices...

Have you tried every diet, but never seem able to keep the weight off? Do you feel zapped of all energy? Is your confidence dwindling with every pound you put on?

Well, I’m going to let you into a secret that is going to help solve all the above.

Many of us aren’t actually aware we are consistently sabotaging our efforts to lose excess fat.

There are some common myths I’d like to bust. Fat doesn’t make you fat – sugar makes you fat. Low-fat foods are the worst offenders for weight gain – if manufacturers take something out, ie the fat, they have to substitute something else in, to make it taste nice – sweeteners. And lastly, simply cutting down on your calories will not solve the problem of losing weight. You need to become food-savvy if you really want it to stay off for good.

To get your body working as a lean, fat-burning machine, you have to do a little self-investigatory work. The secret to success is to learn how your hormones massively affect your weight. In today’s world our hormonal balance is constantly thrown into chaos by hidden ‘felons’ in our food chain, our stressful lifestyles and, dare I say, from advice by governing bodies that are funded by the very foodstuff we need to avoid.

When your body is stressed, either by your lifestyle or certain foods, you release a hormone called cortisol. This hormone is needed, but too much of it will inhibit your ability to produce insulin which helps with burning off excess fat.

This means that however canny you are about your diet, if your cortisol levels remain high, you simply won’t lose that excess weight long-term – whatever you try!

Now you may be thinking at this stage that there is no way you can lower your stress levels without a complete change of lifestyle, but this is simply not true. A lot of us are sleep-deprived and this is the first area in which we can all make a change. Sleep is a super-inducing fat loss aid.

There are many ways to decrease your stress levels, but I am limited in space to go through them all, however one super stress-buster is using deep breathing as you lie in bed, lowering your heart rate and calming your body.

Certain foods stimulate and cause stress in your body. The most obvious are alcohol and caffeine, but did you know that sugar, dairy and wheat also cause problems for some of us in relation to hormonal balance.

What about artificial sweeteners? Well, it says it all in the name and in my opinion should be completely avoided.

The commonly-known aspartame is used in diet sodas, cereals, cooking sauces and crisps to name but a few. Aspartame has been linked to cancer, epilepsy, and fibromyalgia, and generally lowers our serotonin levels, leading to food cravings. Ironically it was never tested on humans before it was given its questionable approval by the FDA.

Some foods take more calories to digest and just by the act of chewing these foods, you’re going to increase your calorie burn by up to 30 per cent. These include chard, spring greens, kale and spinach – not only full of fabulous vitamins and calcium, but you will expend more calories as you eat them.

Another fat-burning food source is spices such as chillies, cinnamon and ginger which fire up your metabolism as much as 12 per cent.

Make sure you drink enough water. Water will help you lose under-the-skin bloating and flush out toxins.

It is one of THE key features to losing unwanted fat. Even if you’re not looking to lose weight, the unwanted fats can be storing around your internal organs, so this applies to you to. My advice is to drink one litre for every 50lbs you weigh.

Exercise, of course, can be a missing ingredient. Research shows High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is the BEST for fat burning. You don’t need to be hitting the treadmill for 40 minutes; you just need a quick ten-minute routine which gets you out of breath to do the trick.

My final tip is to work on your mindset. If you imagine yourself being your perfect weight, you are far more likely to achieve it rather than focusing on the negatives like not being able to lose the inches. Once you begin to get excited about the image you have created in your mind, you will find it so much easier to hit your target weight.
