EMSWORTH’S member for Havant Borough Council stepped down yesterday (March 14).

Cllr David Gillett has stepped down from his position and a by-election will be held on Thursday, May 2, to coincide with the county council elections.

Cllr Gillett was first elected in 1998 and was leader of the council for nearly a decade.

He served in the cabinet for more than ten years in total.

He was also a county councillor and a member of the Hampshire Police Authority in addition to being Havant’s representative on the South East Regional Assembly for ten years.

“As a councillor and leader I was always striving to make a difference, particularly to those in areas of deprivation. I am now looking at setting up a Christian charity which will help to co-ordinate an army of volunteers from the churches to work together to serve the needs of the many struggling families and individuals in the East Solent area,” he said.
