A FIRE which destroyed 60 tons of hay and straw at a Hunston barn was a ‘deliberate ignition’.
The West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, which was at the scene at 2.45am last Thursday, said the blaze was a result of a suspected arson.
Firefighters left the scene at 4.40pm on Friday, more than 14 hours after the call came in.
The barn, on Foxbridge Drive, was 50 per cent destroyed by the fire.
Two jets, two ground monitors and a hydrant were used to control the situation, and after the main fire was tackled, a further 60 tons of hay were removed from the building and ‘damped down’.
Eyewitness Mark Chapman, who lives in Foxbridge Drive, was woken up at 3am by the fire.
“It was like fireworks shooting up into the sky,” he said.
“It’s right next to the new building site – it looked like the whole site was on fire.
“I was worried about asbestos, the firemen were wearing masks this morning.”
