INTERVIEW: Claire Sweeney has something to shout about the Mayflower

The swinging '60s are swinging again in Southampton with the arrival of Shout! at the Mayflower.

Starring Claire Sweeney and Su Pollard, it runs from September 16-20, packed with pop anthems including Downtown, Son Of A Preacher Man, I Only Wanna Be With You, These Boots Are Made For Walkin' and You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.

Set in a hairdressing salon, the show offers a musical journey around '60s London, capturing the fashions, the sexual liberation

and the great fun of the times.

Along the way are the songs that made stars of the likes of Petula Clark, Cilla Black, Lulu and Dusty Springfield.

Claire, still known to millions as Lindsey Corkhill in the Channel 4 soap opera Brookside, is certainly enjoying the trip.

She's been on the road with the show since January and is loving it.

"It's working with a great group of people and it is such a feel-good

show. It's a really good fun show – one of those shows that gets you up and dancing in the aisles.

"It's not a serious show, but there is a story. My character comes to London from Liverpool, meets a couple of girls on the train on the way

down and it's really about her escapades in London over the ten years of the 1960s.

"My character is a bit of a good-time girl, wrong bloke, the married man, you know the kind of thing."

And she's certainly swept along by all that the '60s stands for.

"It was the freedom, it was the Pill ...times were changing. People were

becoming more liberal in their ways."

Claire comes to the role on the back of plenty of musical experience, most notably Guys And Dolls and Chicago.

"But the shows I have done before are much more serious. This one is a lot more about the fun."

Tickets on 023 8071 1811.
