THE Wey and Arun Canal remains closed this afternoon (May 21) as police work to establish how the body of a woman in her 60s ended up in the lock at Loxwood.

The body was discovered at 9.30am today in the lock next to the road bridge over the B2133 which has a well used footpath running along beside it.

Police say the woman lived in the Loxwood area.

A fire service technical rescue team was called in to recover the body and the coroner has been informed.

It is the first serious incident in the history of the Wey and Arun Canal Trust’s restoration project.

It began in the 1970s with the aim of restoring 23 miles of the canal.

The Loxwood lock and the road bridge were restored as part of the project and opened in 2009.

The Trust now operates cruises from its base behind the Onslow Arms where it also has a visitor centre.
