£12m drought plan for Sussex
PLANS for a £12m scheme to safeguard water supplies in Sussex have been submitted.
Southern Water is applying for planning permission to develop a new source of water supply.
Meyrick Gough, water resources strategy manager, said: "This scheme will enable us to pump up to ten million litres of water a day from the River Arun, which will be vital during times of drought and low flow in the River Rother."
The scheme involves a new abstraction on the tidal River Arun near Pulborough with a water storage pond, pumping stations and a 1.8km pipeline to the existing Hardham Water Supply Works where the water would be treated.
The water source would be taken from from the River Arun in the Horsham district.
If planning permission is granted construction could begin late in 2010.
