Agency's vital work to protect Climping homes and businesses from the sea

ALMOST 30,000 tonnes of shingle are being used to shore up sea defences at Climping, to protect more than 110 homes and 15 businesses from flooding.

Nick Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, visited the beach at the end of Climping Street on Friday (November 21), to watch the major Environment Agency scheme.

It involves moving 28,000 tonnes of shingle from West Beach, at Littlehampton, and "recycling" it at Climping to counter the effect of erosion. Excavators will continue the essential maintenance work until the end of this year.

Coastal conservation areas and sand dunes will also be protected by the improved defences, and the shingle strengthen newly-repaired defences at Climping Street which were damaged in severe storms in March.

James Humphrys, Environment Agency area manager, said: "Storms, high winds and severe weather conditions can test our defences at any time of the year. As Mr Gibb saw, by us carrying out this necessary shingle recycling work we are able to maintain the defences at Climping so they are ready for spring tides and stormy weather.

"We will never be able to stop flooding from happening altogether but, where possible, we try to reduce the damage it can cause. Recycling shingle is the most cost-effective way of maintaining the beach whilst still allowing the natural coastal processes to continue."
