Alton College A levels put students on track

Many of them had got up at dawn to check their A level results on the internet – but students still made the traditional pilgrimage to Alton College to celebrate and commiserate their results.

And there was plenty to cheer about for students from the Petersfield and Bordon areas who achieved the results they need to take up offers of university places.

Among the celebrating groups were six friends, four of whom went to The Petersfield School together before going to Alton College.

They will be studying subjects ranging from architecture to motorsport engineering.

Edward Hogg, from Alresford, said his A level results would enable him to take up an offer to study motorsport engineering at Oxford Brookes University.

"There's a lot of competition to get on that course, so I'm pleased," he said.

"I build and race go karts, and while everyone else is celebrating tonight I'll be taking part in a competition in Dorset."

Former TPS students James Cox, from Clanfield, Jamie Wright, from Four Marks, John Gallacher, from Clanfield, and Will Haynes, from Buriton, will all be starting at different universities in October – while their friend Jack Harding, from Liss Forest, plans to spend six months teaching at a school in India before beginning his university career next year.

John and Will, who both got three grade A passes, will be going to St John's College, Oxford to study physics and Downing College, Cambridge, to study architecture.

Also off to Cambridge, to study natural sciences at Selwyn College, will be Auriol Rae, from Monks Orchard, Petersfield, who notched up an almost perfect set of results – three grade A*s and one grade A.

"I was confident, but I wasn't expecting to do quite that well," said the former Bedales School pupil.

Another group of former TPS pupils were among the early risers who had checked their results on the internet before heading to the college to celebrate.

Their studies will be taking them to all corners of the country.

Lucy Ferguson, from Herne Farm, will be doing psychology at Leeds University; Guy Norris, from Tilmore Road, is off to study physics at Exeter; James Coverdale and Deanna O'Brien, both from Herne Farm, will be going to Warwick and Salford to study chemistry and broadcast technology respectively; and Katie Roe, from Stroud, will be going to Leeds University for her psychology course.

Brother and sister Thomas and Emily Brown, of Willow Road, Liss Forest, were celebrating with friends.

Thomas will be studying history at Winchester University while Emily will be going back to Alton College for an art foundation course.

"I was up at six this morning checking the results on the UCAS website before it got clogged up," he said.

"But I still wanted to come into college to get my results, and I still felt a few butterflies in my stomach."

Identical twin brothers Sam and Alex Cobb, from Hook, have always been friendly rivals – but there was little to choose between their results.

Sam got two A* grades and two As – while Alex got one A* and three As.

A trio of friends who all went to Alton Convent School are about to set off on very different career paths.

Lottie Anderson, from Alton, will be studying psychology and early childhood studies at Lincoln University; Georgie Head, from Headley Down, will be doing biology at Southampton; and Georgia Crowley, from Ropley, will be taking a nursing course at Kings College, London.
