FIREFIGHTERS were called to West Wittering beach today (Tuesday, August 12) when 2,500 feet of grass caught fire at East Head.
Two fire engines and three fire service Land Rovers are still on the scene [as of 5.15pm] following a call at 3.26pm.
A fire service spokeswoman said the blaze was at the East Head end of the beach and the situation was being dealt with.
Anita Russell, who lives nearby, sent us pictures of the scene.
“Apparently a mother and two children were barbecuing in the midst of the dunes, dunes caught fire, they panicked and ran away,” she said.
“A force-seven westerly wind carried it swiftly over the dunes.”
