Brightening up the bell tower at Chichester Cathedral

A JEWEL in Chichester's crown has been cleaned up while it awaits full restoration.

Around six workers on abseil ropes pulled back the netting surrounding the cathedral bell tower to remove vegetation growing underneath it.

The seven-day-long project costing around 9,000 was undertaken to ensure public safety until the much-needed restoration of the tower.

Clerk of Works Ralph Tyreman said: "We are desperate to restore it and it has been in the programme for a good number of years.

"We have just the cloisters and the southern area of the cathedral left to do and then we will refurbish the bell tower. The works will need to be costed, but let's just say it will cost a lot."
