British Heart Foundation's first year in Chichester

A Chichester charity shop is celebrating a successful first year in new surroundings.

The British Heart Foundation shop in North Street swapped places with its neighbouring launderette which wanted to downsize - and the switch has been a good one with takings up 50 per cent.

Area manager Preston Davies praised the level of support from people: "It's been an absolutely fantastic first yea. We have taken probably 50 per cent more money than the previous shop.

"We have continued to be supported by the people of Chichester. The level of donations they have given us are gratefully received.

"This time last year we were not far off five digits for the first week, which is an achievement.

"I would say generally speaking the recession has helped us. People are more cautious about what they are spending their money on and where they are spending it.

"When you come in here, you expect to find bargains, as well as premium products at a competitive price."

Tickets are still available for the shop's Christmas raffle, with the prize a hamper of goodies, and entry into a national draw for 2,500 in holiday vouchers. Tickets cost 1 and the draw will be made on December 22, at 4pm.

There are currently 29 volunteers at the shop, but they are always looking for more. Anyone interested in helping out should call 01243 776611.
