IT HAS been four years since married couple Shirley and Simon Barnes decided to start their own business.

Chichester-based Dinamiks is a firm which has designed appraisal software for companies. It has been taken on by businesses all over the country and is slowly growing worldwide, with interest in the USA, Australia and Canada.

“I worked for an insurance company,” said Shirley.

“Simon was in IT and I was a business adviser.

“What they wanted to identify was why they had all these managers and staff underneath them, some performing well and some who were not.

“We wrote a small programme, but the company did not want to use it. We decided to develop it. That’s why we started Dinamiks.”

And four years later, it is a resounding success.

The programme is designed for businesses to track their employees’ progress and to set goals for them.

“It is all about growing the businesses as well as growing the individual,” said Shirley.

“You set up your goals as a company, and individuals will set goals against that so at the end of the year the company can see how well they have done.

“Also the individual can see how well they have developed at the company.”

The firm works with human resources companies which suggest Dinamiks to customers.

After small beginnings, the firm has grown rapidly.

Employing two apprentices, the pair talked about why it is important to employ youngsters.

“We chose to go down the route of apprentices as they are the ones who have fresh ideas, and keep up with the market,” said Shirley

“They can teach us just as much as we can teach them.”

The pair also spoke about why appraisals are so important for businesses.

“I personally think a company needs to understand the staff,” said Shirley.

“If a company sets up goals they can easily start developing their staff and the staff will work better because they have helped to achieve the company’s goals. So it’s better for the company and the individual.”

Simon said: “It’s making them inclusive rather than a person just doing a job. It is building a team.”
