A STAUNCH defence has been made of plans to move Emsworth library into a community centre.
There is currently a public consultation on moving the library from St Peter’s Square into the community centre in Church Path.
Following outcry over the news, Hampshire county councillor Keith Chapman defended the proposal, saying no decision had yet been made.
He said consultation was open until October 18 and it was important to hear from as many people as possible.
He said: “As we continue to move the county’s library and information service into a strong position for the future, we want to move away from having libraries in stand-alone buildings and relocate them into vibrant community hubs where appropriate.”
He acknowledged the current library was busy, but said the building was ‘small, difficult to maintain and expensive to rent’.
