Controversial shop plan for Hassocks

PROPOSALS to build a large shop unit and flats in Keymer Road, Hassocks are being recommended for refusal by planners.

Councillors on Mid Sussex District Council's South Area Planning Committee are due to meet today(Sept 2) night to discuss the plans to demolish premises at 22-24 Keymer Road and build a shop, four flats and a rear garage with an additional flat above.

The building under threat is currently occupied by an antiques centre and rumours have been circulating in the village that a national supermarket chain is interested in using the new shop unit, if it is built.

The application by Weald Estates Ltd has generated widespread opposition from traders in the village although no retailer is mentioned in the application.

Villagers and the parish council have also expressed concern over potential traffic congestion at the top of Keymer Road and over-development of the site.

Planners at Mid Sussex District Council are recommending refusal on the grounds of over-development.
