Behind the innovative scheme is Chichester District Improvement District (BID) set up in 2012 to promote shops, retailers, restaurants, cafes, cars and accommodation in the city centre.

One of a rolling programme of promotional projects, BID has contracted specialist data analysis company, Noggin Ltd to monitor the patterns of foot flow in Chichester

Noggin analyses and reports on movements of people throughout Chichester via innovative anonymous ‘people counting’ sensors.

These are located at 14 different locations throughout Chichester city centre and pick up a signal from each mobile phone, iPad or other wireless device.

Chichester’s BID members can view the data recorded through an online portal which shows live, up-to-the-second foot flow and hotspots in the city.

Over time, the advanced data collected by Noggin aims to build a broad picture of where and how people move throughout Chichester, as well as which car parks are used most often and how regularly people visit.

BID Manager, Charlotte Wickins said: “We are excited to introduce this new, effective, cutting-edge foot flow initiative to our city. Not only will it help us monitor the appeal of events, but businesses will be able to forecast and manage staffing levels along with holiday rotas, using actual data rather than guess work – something we’ve not been able to help with previously.

“We have already been able to put it to good use monitoring foot flow in South Street, to check the impact of Southern Gas Network’s current improvement works on retail outlets and we can see people are not browsing as much in the shops. Useful stuff!”

Sven Latham, Noggin managing director added: “With such informative data analysis and a clearer picture of where people actually go, I am interested to see the role it plays in measuring the success of business development opportunities. Chichester is the first city to trial these people counters and I’m certain it won’t be the last.”
