Defence minister pays tribute to war veterans
GOVERNMENT defence minister Derek Twigg has paid tribute to war veterans ahead of this weekend's Veterans' Day event in Worthing.
Mr Twigg, Under Secretary of State for Defence, wrote to the Herald before the two-day celebrations in Steyne Gardens.
The events, which include a Lancaster Bomber flypast and a display of military vehicles, is part of a nationwide series of celebrations.
He wrote: "I want to pay tribute to our veterans.
"In this country we are fortunate to have around 5 million men and women who are veterans.
"They range from those who did National Service to those who were reservists deployed on recent operations.
"Some of them are still in their twenties and thirties whilst our eldest is Henry Allingham at 112.
Stories and experiences
"One thing they all have in common are fascinating stories and incredible experiences.
"Every veteran can be proud of the contribution they have made to the security of the United Kingdom.
"A security that allows all of us to live our lives in freedom and with confidence.
"Something we often take for granted, but that is purchased at a high price by our brave servicemen and women overseas.
Defend way of life
"They have defended us from aggressors who sought to attack this land, our people or our way of life.
"In the process acquiring a range of skills and abilities that continue to benefit society.
"Every veteran deserves our respect and it is right that as a nation we take time to demonstrate our gratitude and admiration.
"So today we celebrate their legacy of service and thank them for what they have done for us in the past and all they continue to do today in their communities.
"Here in Sussex this weekend veterans in Worthing will be celebrating in advance of the national event.
"Last year Veterans' Day was marked by over a hundred major events up and down the country with half a million people attending.
"This year it is set to be even bigger.
Recognise bravery
"The main national event is taking place in Blackpool all this week, but hundreds of villages and towns across Wales, England, Scotland and even some abroad are all doing their bit too.
"I think it a sign of this nation's unity that we can come together to recognise the bravery and sacrifice of veterans of the British Armed Forces.
"Veterans' Day is also an opportunity to remind families and veterans of the wide range of help that is available should they want it.
"Happily, the vast majority of veterans make a successful move into civilian life without the need for assistance.
"But if any UK veteran needs help our free veterans help phone line on 0800 169 2277 is a good place to start.
"I wish every veteran a particularly special day as they are remembered throughout the nation."
