Dog rescued from Worthing house fire
A DOG had a lucky escape after it was rescued from a burning building in Goring today (Sunday, November 8).
Worthing fire fighters were called to the house fire in Coleridge Crescent at 2.30pm after neighbours saw smoke pouring out of the property.
When they arrived, smoke was billowing out through the chimney and all the windows were blackened.
Four fire fighters, wearing breathing apparatus, entered the semi-detached home and began a search.
Luckily the only occupant was a King Charles Spaniel, which suffered serious breathing problems and needed oxygen at the scene.
It was then taken to Grove Lodge Veterinary Surgery for treatment.
Fire fighters were at the house for a couple of hours tackling the blaze.
The fire is now under investigation but it is thought the fire started in the kitchen, which was completely destroyed.
The rest of the ground floor was severely damaged by heat and smoke.
Watch commander Darren Wickings said there were two important messages to be leant from the terrible accident.
"The premises did have a smoke alarm but unfortunately the battery was flat," he said.
"It is likely the fire was burning possibly up to three hours prior to the alarm being raised by a neighbour that saw smoke coming from the property.
"If they had a working smoke alarm this could have alerted the neighbours quicker to the fire which would have alerted us a lot quicker.
"Also in this situation, most of the doors were left open which obviously meant the smoke and heat had spread through the whole house damaging every room in the property.
"If you go out or are going to bed close as many doors as you can."
The occupants were out and arrived home while the fire crew were still at the scene.
They are currently being helped by the Red Cross victim support unit from Littlehampton.
