Fernhurst villagers brave heat for sponsored Red Lion walk

The annual fun walk from Fernhurst's Red Lion pub raised more than £4,000, with more to come, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

For several years the organisers had joined a walk in London run by the pub's brewery, but last year they decided to keep it in Fernhurst and it proved such a success they did the same this year.

Around 70 walkers took part, with a number opting for fancy dress on the chosen woodlands theme, and appearing as fairies.

It was through woodlands that much of the walk took place as it went from Fernhurst to Lower House Farm, Hoewyck Farm, Slong Farm, through Verdley Woods, Henley, and then back via Courts Farm.

Walkers were given an extra boost at the start with bacon rolls, and after their return there was live music, a barbecue, a tombola and a raffle, all of which added to the funds.

The organisers had taken the heat into their plans with water stops for the walkers and the dogs who accompanied them.

There were marshals at the few road crossings, and St John Ambulance volunteers were on hand. The worst they had to deal with were a few blisters and horsefly bites.

Mick and Maggie Cameron from the Red Lion said having the walk locally had made it far more popular than when they ran a coach to London.

With quiz nights added in, the pub's total for Macmillan last year was more than 7,000 and the Camerons are hoping to top that this year.
