THERE is no end in sight to the flooding which has hit the Chichester area in the last few weeks.
Flood alerts remain for the River Lavant as well as West Dean, Singleton, Charlton, East Dean and Chilgrove.
What’s more, the Met Office has released a weather warning for ice, as temperatures are set to fall below freezing in the early hours of tomorrow morning (January 10).
“Surface temperatures will fall to around or just below freezing late on Thursday night into Friday morning across parts of England and Wales,” said a Met Office spokesman.
“With a lot of standing water present in many areas from the recent wet weather and flooding icy stretches are expected to form, particularly on untreated surfaces.
“The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel on the roads.”
The Environment Agency reissued a flood alert for the River Lavant this morning (January 9).
“Groundwater levels in the Lavant valley are high,” said an Environment Agency statement.
“River Lavant river levels are high and will respond to rising groundwater levels. At the moment the levels on the Lavant have remained mainly constant since yesterday.
“The forecast for rest of the week is much better with it being mostly dry from Thursday into Friday. A further band of light rain is expected from Friday evening but this is currently forecast to clear on Saturday morning.
“Up to 5- 10mm of rainfall is currently forecast for Monday. River levels will rise in response to this rain but we do not except this to cause property flooding. We are constantly monitoring river levels and have workers in the field to relay information, clear blockages and operate defences if required.”
In West Dean, Singleton, Charlton, East Dean and Chilgrove, groundwater flooding is effecting the area, and there is likely to be flowing water on roads between Singleton and East Dean as well as on B2141 Chilgrove Road.
