A SURPRISE party has been thrown for a twice-serving former mayor and long-serving Chichester city councillor.
John Rankin, of Cedar Drive, Chichester celebrated his 90th birthday at Chichester City Council in North Street last Wednesday.
“It was a happy occasion enjoyed by all present and he was completely surprised,” said John’s daughter, Catherine Rankin, who organised the party with her sister Fiona.
Members of his extended family, long-standing friends, students and colleagues from Mr Rankin’s past career were all invited to the celebratory lunch.
Over the past 35 years John Rankin has served periods in all three local councils, city, district and county and served as mayor of the city twice during that time.
“There were several other past mayors present at the party, too, and we felt it was fitting to hold the party at the Council House due to his long-standing connection with the city,” said Catherine.
“He is currently honorary president of the Chichester Liberal Democrats.”
Mr Rankin was joined by current city councillors Anne Scicluna, Alan Chaplin and mayor of Chichester John Hughes who all toasted his milestone.
