Fun goes on at Duncton despite downpour
A downpour failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the children at The Groove, a club for seven to ten-year-olds, as they prepared for bonfire night celebrations at Duncton Fisheries.
Led by energetic organisers Caroline and Martin Fleetwood, they dunked
marshmallows in melted chocolate and sprinkles and made toffee apples to sell in aid of the Chestnut Tree House children's hospice in Arundel.
After a snack, a drink and a riotous game of 'winking murder', they continued the fun by making guys for the bonfire to be lit after a special communion service for the congregation of St Giles' Church at the fisheries.
They finished up by going out in anoraks and wellies to build up the bonfire in the pouring rain.
The Groove is for children from seven upwards, and, while the cut-off is officially around ten years, older children and teenagers find it such fun that quite a few of them have enlisted as helpers and keep on
coming back.
Activities usually take place once a month in Graffham or Duncton and in the past have included a 'roving meal', camp building, games and crafts at Seaford College, a visit to a farm, cookery, treasure hunts, walks on the downs and bonfires.
Since the numbers of children attending can get up to 30, the Fleetwoods are usually assisted by parent volunteers.
The Groove is a joint venture between Duncton and Graffham Schools, and St Giles' Church, Graffham.
However, all children over seven are welcome to go along and take part and further information is available from Mrs Fleetwood on 01798 342685.
