Half-cousins set to marry after leap year proposal

A PETERSFIELD girl who leapt in and proposed to her childhood sweetheart on February 29 last year will finally tie the knot on Saturday.

Bride-to-be Kathryn Ellis (32) of Castle Garden, in Swan Street, will walk up the aisle in St Peter's Church to wed John Blandford (38).

When Kathryn realised that girls could traditionally propose marriage to their boyfriends in a leap year, she did not waste any time.

"We were just at home cuddling up on a bean bag when we saw a feature about girls' proposing on the BBC's One Show," she said.

"I popped the question and he did not hesitate to say yes."

The pair, who have been together for two years, are half-cousins due to Kathryn's mother Mim and John's mother being half-sisters.

Kathryn, who works at Petersfield Tourist Information Centre, said she fell in love with John when they were children.

She said: "I have had a crush on John for as long as I can remember. We used to go on family holidays together and I always knew he was someone special."

Her mother is giving Kathryn away and the bridal party will be led up the aisle by Petersfield stalwart David Weeks.

Afterwards a double-decker bus will take Kathryn and John, plus their guests to their reception, which is being held in Southsea.

Kathryn added: "I cannot wait – I am so excited!"
