Help support young carers in West Sussex

VOLUNTEERS are needed to provide transport for young carers attending local support groups.

West Sussex County Council is looking for volunteers to give around three hours a week to support young carers.

A young carer is someone who takes on responsibilities at home because someone in their family has a disability, has been ill for a long time, experiences mental ill health, or has a problem linked to drugs or alcohol.

“Often this can mean that getting out and about to social activities and groups can become very difficult, because the young carer can’t rely on a lift from mum or dad,” explained cabinet member for Children Peter Evans.

“This can make these young people very isolated and affect their self-confidence. Just being able to attend a group with other young carers once a week can make a big difference.”

Full training and supervision is provided, travel costs and agreed
out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

If you think you could help a young carer, call 01903 270300. The closing date for applications is Monday (February 3).
