Homes, shops and church hall on way in £10m Eastgate scheme for Chichester

WORK on a multi-million pound scheme to redevelop a key site in Chichester's city centre is due to get under way next week.

New homes, some shopping space and a new church hall will be built on land between Eastgate and New Park Road after the demolition of the old swimming pool in Eastgate Square.

Managing director of developer Seaward, David West, said the 10m redevelopment was much anticipated in the city.

He said: "We have worked long and hard to ensure this development will result in a terrific improvement to the Eastgate area and have already received a tremendous amount of interest from both the general public and potential businesses, who would like to locate here."

The transformation of the site will see 19 four and five-bedroom three-storey town houses, and 53 one and two-bedroom apartments built, together with 11,000 sq ft of commercial and retail space.

Seaward will also lease a youth information centre and a 100-space public carpark to Chichester District Council.

Chichester's art-house cinema, the New Park Centre will also benefit from a refurbishment and extension, part paid for by the Chichester District Council, funded by the sale of the land.

District council's portfolio holder for resources, John Cherry, said: "The district council does not have a large city centre land holding and therefore we are delighted when rare opportunities like this arise to improve our beautiful city."

Improvements to the street scene in Eastgate Square also also planned.

The demolition of numerous buildings which formerly stood on the site, including the former swimming baths, has been completed.
