A HUB described as ‘the launchpad of Selsey’s future’ will open its doors this month.
Selsey Works is a new initiative, which will give residents somewhere to go to get advice, learn new skills, or even join an arts and crafts group.
The centre, which is on the High Street, will bring several different services under one roof, providing a job centre, a place for business advice, as well as the chance to start a business in its pop-up shop.
Sam Tate, Selsey town co-ordinator, set up the hub, and said: “This innovative project is extremely exciting and gives Selsey the opportunity to help itself by providing much-needed resources and facilities for local people and businesses.
“Ultimately, it will enable Selsey to develop into a vibrant, seaside town with excellent employment opportunities. We want people to want to set up a business here.”
There will be six ‘hot desks’, providing cheap desk space for budding entrepreneurs, and a pop-up shop will give firms a chance to sell their wares on the high street.
But it’s not all about business. It is somewhere for residents to go for training or advice on a number of things.
“It is for everyone,” said Mrs Tate.
“Anyone can come to Selsey Works, whether they are unemployed, working from home, or even mums who have been out of work for a few years.”
She said if people had been out of work for a while, Selsey Works could help them get their confidence up, and help them to find a job which suits them.
“It’s about treating people as people, taking the time to get to know them,” said Mrs Tate.
It is also a place where people can get benefits and housing advice, as Chichester District Council officers and officers from the Job Centre will use the centre as well.
The centre will also be used by Chichester College which will provide training courses, funded by Selsey Works.
Funding for the project has been provided by the Department of Work and Pensions, West Sussex County Council, and Selsey’s new homes bonus from Chichester District Council, plus support is being provided by Chichester in Partnership.
Selsey Works will officially launch on January 31.
