INSPIRED by her mother’s medical treatment, a woman form Wiltshire has taken on the challenge to raise money for St Richard’s Hospital.

Katy Duke has raised £1,460 for the Lavant Ward by completing the British Vitality 10km London run, which took place in July.

“I thought it would be really challenging raising money as I live in Marlborough – but so many kind souls could relate to my story and they were quick to give me the moral support that I needed,” said Katy.

Katy was motivated to run for her mother’s local hospital after Loretta Duke, 62, experienced an acute stroke last summer and received care from St Richard’s Hospital.

“It just goes to show that fundraising for local charities isn’t necessarily all about postcode sectors,” Katy said.

Her friends have also been in touch to thank her for inspiring them to get up and running.

“I’m pleased to say that quite a few friends have now started running – and for me this was another important aspect of the campaign,” she said.

“My mum was very fit when she had her stroke, playing badminton twice a week, and this certainly helped to give her the physical strength and the mental stamina for a full recovery.”

Katy said she could think of no better way to thank the Lavant Ward and support the ‘continuation of great care’.

“The Lavant Ward were just amazing in the way they cared for my mum, giving her the medical care, compassion and moral support which helped her to regain a good quality of life.

She said all the hospital staff she encountered were ‘professional, patient and understanding’.

The hospital also offers care for
stroke patients at Donald Wilson
House, the hospital’s neurological rehabilitation centre.

Katy said she hoped the money raised would help other people, like Loretta, to have a positive experience when they needed it most.

She is also collecting raffle prizes to help her to raise additional funds.
