More people in Worthing, Shoreham and Littlehampton hope gym will fix it

GYMS in Worthing, Shoreham and Littlehampton are seeing a January increase in members keen to shed the Christmas pounds.

People joining some gyms in the area this month have increased by more than double from December.

Promotions, such as getting the first 30 days free and low joining fees, have encouraged people to get off the sofa and into the gym for the new year.

Emma Robson, membership manager of Esporta Health Club in Rustington, said: "People use the new year as a new start and see it as a great time to join.

"Between January and March, it is always a lot busier than the rest of the year."

Kelly Hagan has been manager of the Shoreham Community and Leisure Centre, in Pond Road, for eight years.

She said: "There is always an increase in members after Christmas."

She added that seeing people get fit acts as inspiration to other new members.

At Worthing Leisure Centre, in Shaftesbury Avenue, operations manager Chris Boden says it is the busiest time of the year.

He said as well as offering various activities from swimming to basketball, the leisure centre has a programme offering customers nutritional advice to help them keep off the weight.

Mr Boden said: "We don't just let them in the gym and off they go. We offer advice to help and encourage people along the way."
