BROWNIES from across the district have been celebrating their centenary in true girl-guiding style.

More than 120 Brownies congregated at Chichester High School on Saturday for a sleepover, crafts, games and a series of challenges to celebrate 100 years.

Jane Mottershead, district commissioner for Bourne, was one of the organisers.

“It was great – the whole event was really good,” she said.

“We were so lucky with the weather. The kids all had a wonderful time. There were crafts going on in the hall and we had a photo booth set up with crazy frames. That was really good.”

The Brownies also let off
steam outside, with games in the school grounds.

After all the activities, the girls tucked in to a fish and chip supper, with a van arriving on-site.

“I don’t know how they managed to do fish and chips for everyone – the girls in the van were great.

“We also did wide games with torches in the dark before bed. They went to sleep at about midnight, but once they were asleep, they really slept.

“I have to say the girls were absolutely super.”

Jane also thanked the Co-op for supplying drinks and snacks for the event and Wilkinsons in Bognor for donating some craft items.

As part of the celebrations, the Brownies not only have a sleepover, they have to complete challenges.

“There are nine challenges in total, including individual challenges as well as community and world challenges, ranging from learning a bit about the history of the Brownies to experiencing something new,” said Jane.

The Chichester division will meet girls from all over the county at Brinsbury, where they will enjoy having a go on a zipwire, archery and wall-climbing.

The Brownies came from Chichester, Bosham, Funtington and West Stoke, Birdham, Southbourne, Selsey, Hunston and Donnington to celebrate
the occasion.
