More than 100 Metropolitan policemen and women lined Knockhundred Row and Church Hill in Midhurst on Monday for the funeral of colleague Nicholas Wharton.

Marathon runner Mr Wharton, 30, was killed on September 11, while out on a training run at his home near Lewes when a tree branch fell on him. His funeral took place at Midhurst parish church on Monday morning, close to his parents' home.

Police colleagues and Metropolitan traffic wardens lining the route saluted as the funeral procession made its way to the church.

More than 270 people, including many of his police colleagues, attended the service which was conducted by the Rev Jonathan Watson. Mr Wharton joined the police force only 18 months ago.

There was a reading by his long-standing friend James Tod and tributes paid by his godfather Kenneth Forbes and Supt Simon Ovens from the Metropolitan police.

A poem was read by Mr Wharton's girlfriend, Rosie Taylor.
