Praise for the Fernhurst Centre

The Fernhurst Centre, with its community role, internet access and now a cafe, has been hailed the flagship of Chichester district in its field of provision.

Heather Caird, a district councillor for Fernhurst, told volunteers and friends who run the centre that while others had opened and failed, theirs had been a success from the start and she believed it would go on from strength to strength.

Her confidence was voiced at a party held to mark seven years of the centre.

The trustees welcomed their guests and they were updated on the running of the centre and the financial situation.

In respect of the latter, there was a warning careful scrutiny was needed as Chichester District Council was reducing its level of support.

Since the centre opened, the use of its computers has declined as more people have bought their own and learned how to use them through the range of courses at the internet cafe.

To meet changing needs, three computers have been moved and a cafe-style area has been created.

It is proving popular with a range of age groups including young mothers.

The centre's two managers, Julia Roxan and Pauline Colcutt, are retiring and are being replaced by new recruits. More help is always welcome.
