Prized seminar gives teachers a head start

Aspiring headteachers from West Sussex picked up tips and hints on realising their ultimate goal from education experts at a special conference.

More than 120 existing and aspiring headteachers and school governors from across the county descended on Avisford Park in Arundel for the seminar, part of a local campaign to secure tomorrow's school leaders.

Among them were Victoria Leslie and Rachel Lobley, both acting deputy headteachers at Kingsham Primary School in Chichester, Pat Ashman, deputy headteacher at Felpham Community College in Bognor and Linda Hummerston, assistant headteacher at St Margaret's C of E Primary School in Midhurst.

The teachers learned how to plan for headteacher recruitment and identify leadership potential, consider pension changes and help manage the workforce.

They also received personal advice and confidence-boosting tips.

The event was jointly organised by the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) and West Sussex County Council.

Maggie Roger, national succession consultant in the south-east for the NCSL, said: "As the baby-boomer generation of heads nears retirement, it's crucial that talented school leaders have the confidence to put themselves forward for the role.

"It is equally important that existing heads and governors have the support they require to identify and nurture future school leaders."

Exhibitors and speakers included the NCSL, management consultancy, the Hay Group, the Teachers' Pension Scheme Voluntary Services Overseas and the Southern Educational Leadership Trust.
